Not everyone can embrace the truth/reality of living a parallel life. Virtual immersion in a 3D environment gives us the unique ability to exist in more than one place at one moment : hence a parallel life. It challenges the spiritual as well as the mental and physical realities of our existence. We in habit another body in another realm. In doing this at some point in time one must consider the essence of self (soul/personality). Not everyone is ready for this journey yet, especially if you are only considering SL and 3D environments from a business stand point. When has business made room for the individual? never mind the individuals soul......
3D virtual environments challenge the very core of a persons beliefs by forcing a person to reflect on the question "what is real?" This inner journey is necessary and requires some curiosity, mental stability and a desire to grow beyond who and what you are the very moment you ask it. As people grow in this world to accept their oneness and to learn their personal limits, boundaries and what gifts they have to offer they will better be able to embrace the deeper concepts of a virtual comm - unity.

There is a special kind of shared group presence, including shared surroundings, that only works in virtual worlds. The problem is, for reasons both technological and psychological, it does not work for everyone.

Technology will get better in time. Psychology is the long term problem. Some folks are not "there" because the virtual is not real enough yet, and they will come along as realism improves. But some are disturbed by the whole idea of being virtually "there." More realism only makes their response more negative.

I would agree that ability to project one's presence exists in other forms of media. However, I believe that virtual worlds is unique in the way that it provides an immersive environment that the participants interact with and share together. I also feel that the most compelling application of the virtual world is its ability to provide an interactive learning environment that can share consequence or reward based on how users interact with the environment.
