Meet Karen Cooper

Association of Virtual Worlds Member Showcase: Karen Cooper

Karen Cooper is the Principle Investigator for Emergent Technologies and Innovation
at the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD). As a Navy
engineer, she holds computer engineering certifications and is a graduate of both
graduate level DoD leadership and technology programs.
Karen is currently leading a NAWCTSD team in virtual world(VW) exploration. She
serves as the NAWCTSD Principle Investigator for Team Orlando - a joint VW effort
for DoD within Central Florida's Research Park. She has taught in Second Life, had
speaking engagements, and participated onVW panel discussions both face-to-face and
virtually.
Karen holds a bachelor's in Math/Computer Science, master's in Information
Management, and Ph.D. in Instructional Technology from the University of Central
Florida.
Her dissertation (Go With the Flow: Examining the Effects of Engagement using Flow
Theory and it’s Relationship to Achievement and Performance in the 3-Dimensional
Virtual Learning Environment of Second Life.) examined the viability of a VW to
serve as an effective and engaging learning platform. The results indicated real
potential for performance and learning gains.
Karen’s research interests include the most emergent technologies - virtual worlds,
mobile technologies, participatory architectures - and their impact on our 21st
century learner.

Thanks,
KarenC
